Chongqing municipality in southwest China is poised to accelerate its growth in the burgeoning field of embodied artificial intelligent (AI) robotics, a pivotal aspect of AI technology that has gained global prominence in recent years.

Embodied AI generally means AI systems that can interact with and learn from their environments, using an array of technologies.

As a significant manufacturing hub in China, Chongqing is leveraging this emerging technology to invigorate its economy.

Recently, a collaboration of seven government departments in Chongqing launched measures for supporting the innovative development of the embodied AI robot industry, aimed at accelerating the rapid advancement of the industry in the region.

Zhong Xi, deputy director of Chongqing Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology, stressed the significance of developing embodied AI robots, which can interact with their environment, make autonomous decisions, and perform physical actions. "Any area that requires 'human-like motions' represents a potential market for embodied intelligent robots," Zhong said.

The newly established policies target the development of large-scale models of embodied AI robots. By focusing on industrial applications, the policies are designed to foster a closed-loop ecosystem encompassing technology, data and business, thus promoting rapid progression in this sector.

Zhong noted that embodied intelligent robots could serve as a crucial engine for transforming and upgrading Chongqing's manufacturing sector. The city's vibrant manufacturing landscape made up of laptops, automobiles and smart home products provides ample application scenarios for advancing embodied AI robots.

Chongqing University is engaged in the field of embodied AI robots, with research labs focusing on embodied AI. Vice President of Chongqing University, Li Jian, said that the Jialing River Laboratory will harness the university's strengths to advance robotics technologies, including robot joints, reducers, controllers, sensors and intelligent computing platforms.

To create a conducive environment for industrial growth, the policy measures advocate for a "platform + project" model to support the establishment of multi-level innovation platforms. The Chongqing Science and Technology Bureau has already initiated key projects aimed at developing sensory humanoid robot technologies.

The city is also establishing mechanisms to facilitate the large-scale application of embodied AI robots, particularly within advanced manufacturing. It plans to promote standardization in the embodied AI robotics industry, including the formation of a standardization technical committee, and incentivizing leading enterprises in the development and revision of industry, national and international standards.

With resources being mobilized and collaborations taking shape, Chongqing's embodied AI robots industry is set to embark on a transformative journey.
