Inspired by the process of human evolution and cell division and recombination, scientists from China and UK have formed the metamorphic theory based on the metamorphosis mechanism and bifurcation control mechanism.
Machines with traditional structure can only complete a single task. They are often ineffectual when faced with complicated tasks that require changing their own structure.
However, guided by the metamorphic theory, in the design of deformation machines, designers just need to set the parameters and follow the "formulas" provided by the theory.
Take a wheeled robot as an example, while it can smoothly move across an even surface, it will be "powerless" if it encounters steps. So, if the wheel changes into a wheel-leg configuration when encountering a step, the robot can easily climb up the steps or jump over obstacles.
The research team has developed a number of metamorphic electric robots and foot robots with various morphologies and crawling postures. In addition, the multi-fingered dexterous hand developed by the team has been used to test equipment of special protective suits for China Astronaut Research and Training Center, serving China's manned space program.
