An 83.2-meter-high tree has grown to new heights to set a new record for the tallest tree in China. According to Institute of Botany under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IBCAS), the tree was recently discovered in Chayu county, southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region.
The record-breaking Abies ernestii var. salouenensis, with a diameter at breast height reaching 207 centimeters, was found by a scientific expedition team from IBCAS. The height of the tree exceeded a recently discovered 76.8-meter Pinus bhutanicain Medog county, Xizang Autonomous Region, and a Taiwania cryptomerioides of around 81 to 82 meters in China's Taiwan.
The virgin forest of Abies ernestii var. salouenensisis dispersed in an area characterized by hills and valleys at an altitude of around 2,300 meters, together with unique and uncommon species of trees, orchids and ferns.
According to IBCAS, the well-preserved forest is a result of local climatic and geological circumstances, as well as rare human activity. The biological community and ecosystems here are extremely important for scientific research and environmental preservation.
