The China-Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Local Economic and Trade Cooperation Conference, themed "Pursuing Regional Cooperation, Joining Hands for Innovative Development," was held in Qingdao, Shandong province in east China, on July 17 and 18.

    The Qingdao Initiative of the China-SCO Local Economic and Trade Cooperation Conference was released during the conference. It covers six key cooperation areas: establishing major international logistics channels, building partnerships of industrial chains and supply chains, advancing trade and investment upgrade, promoting exchanges among industrial parks and zones, building shared and open cooperation platforms, and creating new visions for local economic and trade cooperation.

    Sessions focusing on new energy and marine Internet of Things (IoT) were held to facilitate matchmaking and connection between innovation chains and industrial chains, accelerating the output of technology and products as well as project implementation.

    Energy cooperation has been a priority of the SCO since it was founded 24 years ago, according to Li Junxia, head of the Russia and Asia division of the international department of the National Energy Administration. The SCO member states share a strong complementarity in resources, markets and technologies, which means a large space for cooperation.

    China is continuously bringing innovative new energy technologies, offering pragmatic and efficient solutions. At the matchmaking session for international cooperation in new energy, Chinese enterprises and research institutions introduced advanced technologies and solutions like ultra high power offshore wind turbines and compressed air energy storage, drawing the attention of many attendees.

    Kazakhstan is exploring technology R&D, equipment manufacturing, project investment and talent nurturing in the new energy sector, according to an official from Shymkent, a city in Kazakhstan. He hoped Chinese entrepreneurs, investors and technological experts would visit Kazakhstan and participate in the construction of the country's new energy projects.

    Cooperation in marine IoT would have natural advantages as most SCO member states and dialogue partners have vast oceans or long coast lines. With marine IoT and the smart application of marine big data, coastal pollution monitoring, sea farming, and marine forecasting and disaster prevention and mitigation have entered a new development phase, Wang Juncheng, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said.

    "It is a general trend to vigorously develop marine IoT. We look forward to all parties embracing the vast market of SCO member states, enriching the connotation of cooperation and expanding the space for cooperation," Wang said.

    Qingdao is planning to develop future marine industries, including marine IoT. The port city will focus on technological breakthroughs and infrastructure upgrade, nurturing marine IoT players and industry clusters, and expanding application scenarios and global synergy.

    It will also seek to deepen marine IoT industry cooperation with global partners, according to Meng Qingsheng, director of Qingdao Municipal Marine Development Bureau.
