This year marks the 10th anniversary of the China-CELAC (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) Forum. Over the past decade, under the forum and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), China and Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries have achieved remarkable cooperation in various fields. China has provided strong support in key areas such as infrastructure, helping improve people's livelihoods in LAC countries.

    Economic and trade cooperation

    Economic and trade cooperation between the two sides has deepened and economic complementarity enhanced. Through the China-Caribbean Economic and Trade Cooperation Forum and the China International Import Expo (CIIE), LAC countries have showcased and popularized their specialty products in the Chinese market, such as Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee and Jamaican lobsters.

    At the sixth CIIE in 2023, a brand of chocolate won over visitors. It was a joint output model, made by blending high-quality cocoa ingredients from China's southernmost province Hainan as well as Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean. It became a typical case of agricultural processing cooperation between the two countries.

    The trade volume between China and LAC countries doubled in the past decade, reaching a milestone of 518.4 billion USD in 2024. China is second largest trading partner country of the region, a position it has enjoyed for several years.

    The projects carried out by China in LAC countries include agriculture and manufacturing, making significant contributions to local economic growth. And the natural resources and specialty products exported by LAC countries, such as oil, rum and coffee, also meet the demands of the Chinese market.

    "China has been a very good and reliable partner for the Global South countries, including Grenada and other countries in the Caribbean," Grenada's Foreign Affairs, Trade and Export Development Minister Joseph Andall said. "We value our relationship with China because it is based on mutual respect… It is something that we should all continue and deepen."

    Infrastructure development

    There is strong demand for infrastructure construction in LAC countries, and China has advantages in capital, technology and products in the field.

    More than 200 infrastructure projects and multiple industrial capacity cooperation projects built by China have generated more than one million jobs for the local people, according to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

    In Jamaica, the North-South Expressway, a 65-meter road network connecting capital Kingston with port town Ocho Rios on the north coast, was invested in and constructed by China Harbor Engineering Co. It has shortened driving time on the stretch from four hours to one, improving tourism, trade and real estate industries and creating more than 10,000 jobs.

    Another Caribbean country Antigua and Barbuda was among the first in the region to join the BRI. The island nation's Prime Minister Gaston Browne said China has helped build socio-economic infrastructure in his country and considerably supported healthcare, sports and sustainable development.
