SCO Nations Enhance Sustainable Cooperation
By LIN Yuchen

Against the backdrop of mounting global climate challenges and shifting geopolitical landscapes, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is emerging as a critical platform for advancing sustainable development across Eurasia.

The recent China-SCO sustainable development investment promotion event, held as a side event of the 2025 SCO Summit, brought together nearly 400 officials and business leaders from SCO member countries in Tianjin city, east China.

The event witnessed a total of 18 cooperation projects signed, with a combined investment of 4.795 billion RMB, spanning key sectors such as renewable energy, infrastructure, and petrochemicals.

These efforts reflect a growing consensus among SCO nations to accelerate the energy transition. Strategic deals included a 600 MW solar power plant in Kyrgyzstan, a 200 MW substation in Egypt, and the export of nearly 3,000 Chinese-made vehicles — many of them electric — to Central Asia.

On the ground, transformative projects are already reshaping local energy landscapes. In Uzbekistan, a one GW photovoltaic project invested in by China Energy Engineering Corporation now generates 2.4 billion kWh annually, while creating 1,600 jobs. In Pakistan and Russia, hydropower and gas-steam projects are delivering clean electricity and fostering technical cooperation.

The momentum follows the SCO 2024 adoption of the strategy for the development of energy cooperation until 2030, which outlines key areas of energy cooperation among SCO member states, such as enhancing energy transit capacity, diversifying export routes, and promoting innovation in renewables and hydrogen energy, along with the establishment of a climate change working group in early 2025. These institutional steps, alongside green finance innovations and clean tech exchanges, are aligning member states around shared sustainability goals.

Founded in 2001, the SCO comprises China, Russia, India, Pakistan, and several Central Asian nations. As its geopolitical significance grows, the organization is evolving into a comprehensive regional partnership anchored in economic resilience and environmental stewardship.

As SCO Deputy Secretary-General Sohail Khan stated, "Consensus must become roadmap, and vision must become reality." China's proactive leadership is turning these words into action — ushering in a new chapter of collective progress and green development across Eurasia.
