In 2024, China's economy was generally stable with steady progress made. High-quality development was pursued with solid steps, new quality productive forces witnessed steady development, and reform and opening up continued to deepen. People's well-being was effectively guaranteed, and new and solid strides were taken for Chinese modernization, according to a statistical communiqué released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on February 28.
According to preliminary estimates, China's GDP in 2024 hit 134 trillion RMB, up five percent over the previous year.
"This is a remarkable achievement. It is not easy to achieve five percent economic growth under increasing external pressure and internal difficulties, which demonstrates the resilience and potential of the Chinese economy," NBS deputy commissioner Sheng Laiyun said.
Sheng added that China's economic development is currently in a critical stage of transformation from old to new drivers. "All parties must unswervingly anchor the primary task of high-quality development, coordinate the relationship between cultivating new drivers and updating old drivers, and develop new quality productive forces according to local conditions," he said.
Research and experimental development activity expenditure was about 3.6 trillion RMB in 2024, up by 8.3 percent from 2023, accounting for 2.68 percent of GDP, according to the communiqué. Of this, 249.7 billion RMB was used for basic research programs, up by 10.5 percent.
As major sci-tech achievements continue to emerge, China's creative power continues to be highlighted.
Significant results have also been achieved in intellectual property development. By late 2024, China had 5.6 million valid invention patents, up by 14.0 percent year on year. The number of high-value invention patents per 10,000 people was 14.
In 2024, a total of 0.99 million technology contracts were signed with about 6.8 trillion RMB worth of contracted technology transactions, up by 11.2 percent year on year.
New quality productive forces developed at a steady pace. Among the industries above designated size, equipment manufacturing and high-tech manufacturing accounted for 34.6 percent and 16.3 percent respectively of the total value-added industrial output in 2024. China's operating high-speed railway hit 48,000 km, and the number of 5G base stations reached 4.25 million.
Data from the Ministry of Public Security showed the number of new energy vehicles in use in China continued to increase at a faster pace, reaching 31.4 million by the end of 2024.
The construction of a "Beautiful China" also achieved remarkable results. Of the 3,641 sections under the national monitoring program for surface water, 90.4 percent were of fairly clean water quality (Grade I to III) for the first time. In 2024, the total afforested area was 4.45 million hectares, and 3.22 million hectares of land was improved by grass plantation.
"China's development faces both opportunities and challenges, but favorable conditions outweigh unfavorable factors," Sheng said. There are many advantages, strong resilience, great potential, and the long-term positive conditions and basic trends remain unchanged. As the general trend of high-quality development has not changed, the time and momentum for development are still there, he added.
