China's international patent applications via the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) has ranked first in the world for five consecutive years, according to the 2024 International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI) World Congress.

    The congress, which opened in Hangzhou, east China's Zhejiang province, on October 19, brought together about 2,300 industry professionals from 92 countries and regions to discuss cutting-edge issues in intellectual property.

    This year marks the 30th anniversary of China's accession to the PCT. According to the China National Intellectual Property Administration, in 1994, Chinese applicants filed only 98 patent applications through the PCT, a number that surged to nearly 70,000 in 2023. This remarkable growth has established China as a pivotal player in the global innovation landscape.

    In recent years, the number of intellectual property applications in China has grown rapidly, and China has become the country with the most international patent applications. This means that China's sci-tech innovation capacity has made great progress, according to AIPPI President Shoichi Okuyama.

    However, with the ongoing scientific and technological revolution, new intellectual property challenges are emerging, particularly concerning data, algorithms, and models.

    "A series of new technologies and new business forms have sprung up like mushrooms, and the strategic position and role of intellectual property work has become increasingly prominent," said Long Chuanhong, director of the Patent and Trademark Law Office of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade.

    Long emphasized the importance of both strengthening intellectual property protection and clearly defining its boundaries. This dual approach aims to foster a better environment for innovation and drive development through service innovation.
