A Landmark in China-U.S. Education Cooperation
By GONG Qian

As this year marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of Wenzhou-Kean University (WKU), it has achieved remarkable results and become a landmark project in China-U.S. educational cooperation.

While incorporating the American teaching system, the WKU has also established courses focusing on China's national conditions and culture, Yang Yixin, vice president for Academic Affairs for WKU, told Science and Technology Daily (S&T Daily).

In his cross-cultural psychology course, Dr. Alexander English, an associate professor at the WKU, built an online communication platform in collaboration with professors from U.S. universities. This provides students in China an opportunity to communicate one-on-one with U.S. college students and experience different ideas arising from cultural exchanges.

"It is an eye-opening experience for both groups," Dr. English told S&T Daily. He mentioned that American students enjoy talking with their Chinese counterparts and meeting Chinese of their age helps them better understand the country. Chinese students, on the other hand, learn about different lifestyles from their U.S. peers.

"The exchange between Chinese and American universities offers significant opportunities for both people to bridge cultural gaps, enhance mutual understanding and build trust," Yang told S&T Daily.

As of this June, the WKU has nurtured about 4,000 graduates and over 150 master and doctoral graduates. More than 1,800 students from both universities have participated in exchange programs, during which they attend courses, take part in campus research and entrepreneurial activities, and undertake internships on campus.

Learning and exchange will help young people find more common ground and enable them to carry forward the baton of Sino-U.S. friendship. "We encourage more students to exchange in China through innovative projects in fields such as AI and computer science, thus fostering deeper understanding between students of the two countries," Lamont Repollet, president of Kean University, said.

Apart from the WKU, China-U.S. jointly established universities, including New York University Shanghai, Duke Kunshan University and Tianjin Juilliard School, have become a main channel for American students to study in China.

Through exchange programs and cooperative teaching, higher education plays a key role in promoting academic exchanges and cooperation between the two countries.

In 2023, China announced that it would invite 50,000 young Americans to China for exchange and study programs in the next five years to increase exchanges between the two peoples, especially between the youth.

"Exchanges can sow the seeds of friendship among the youth of two nations," Yang said. "Educational cooperation programs will nurture more young individuals with a global perspective, creating a stable force to promote friendly exchanges between the two sides."
