Dr. Zhao Jun and Dr. Zhu Jun from the Beijing Cancer Hospital shared basic medical information about lung nodules with the public during a recent cancer prevention event.
Many cancers are curable
"An estimated 820,000 new lung cancer cases occurred in China in 2020, of which two percent of those affected are people aged 18 to 45. Although the incidence rate is not high, most of the patients are often at an advanced stage when diagnosed," said Dr. Zhao, adding that people tend to be concerned about the lung nodules seen on CT scans.
With advances in medical technology and the development of innovative drugs, many cancers are no longer "incurable," Dr. Zhu said. However, people's medical knowledge is not up to date with the latest medical developments, so more attention should be paid to science popularization. "The goal is to develop a scientific attitude toward life, tumors and diseases among the general public, and to cultivate a healthy lifestyle," he said.
Over 90 percent of lung nodules are benign
"With the increasing health awareness of the public, many people have received CT scans during medical checkups, and some people feel panicked when they find ground-glass shadows in their lungs. In fact, most of them are viral and bacterial infections rather than lung cancer. Statistics show that more than 90 percent of lung nodules are benign," said Dr. Zhao.
"When a lung nodule is detected for the first time, another CT scan is recommended three months later to monitor its growth. Nodules caused by acute inflammation can be reduced or disappear with anti-inflammatory treatment. In addition, lung nodules with mainly ground-glass images, even if they are lung cancer, are usually in the early stage of carcinoma in situ and rarely metastasize or recur, so the prognosis is very good," Dr. Zhao said.
Emotional Management matters
Zhao introduced that besides factors such as smoking, frying fumes and car exhaust, poor emotional management is also a major cause of lung cancer.
"Toxic and harmful substances cause mutation of normal cells in the body, but the body's immune system can recognize and kill these mutated cells, so most tumors are killed in the cradle by the body's immune system. However, if our mental stress and work pressure are too high or our emotions are not well managed, the immune system can be weakened, resulting in a reduced ability to eliminate mutated cells and the incidence of lung cancer or the chance of lung nodule malignancy will be greatly increased," said Zhao.
