Xiamen Furthers Support for Young Experts
By Staff Reporters

As young talent become the driving force behind sci-tech innovation, Xiamen, southeast China's Fujian province, is actively taking stronger measures to attract and retain young experts.

In 2023, Xiamen launched efforts to draw in young professionals in the fields of education, research and healthcare from renowned universities both domestically and internationally.

Eligible young professionals can enjoy perks through their employment such as housing allowances and preferential relocation policies that can also be extended to their spouses.

The city has also established funding programs and startup funds specifically designed for young talent and supports young experts to take essential posts. As of now, one third of the leaders in key scientific research projects in Xiamen are under the age of 45.

In March, the city launched the Implementation Plan for Sci-tech Innovation Pioneer Projects in Xiamen, which entails several initiatives to support young experts, such as providing dedicated research funds to young PhDs who join research institutes in Xiamen for the first time.

The plan also proposed the development of Xiamen into a first-class sci-tech innovation city in China by 2026.

To achieve this goal, Xiamen will focus on enhancing its innovation capabilities, including bolstering the core competitiveness of enterprises, stimulating innovation vitality in state-owned enterprises, cultivating new R&D institutions, and enhancing innovation capabilities of universities.

The city will build world-class R&D infrastructure and solidify its position as an important city in the bio-economy and new energy fields, according to the plan.

Furthermore, Xiamen will support the implementation of major international science initiatives, including the Ocean Negative Carbon Emissions (ONCE) program initiated by Chinese scientists, and promote sci-tech cooperation between both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
