The Communist Party of China (CPC) ushered in a new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics, eradicated absolute poverty and finished building a moderately prosperous society in all respects, thus completing the First Centenary Goal, Xi Jinping said in a report at the opening session of the 20th CPC National Congress on October 16.

    China has joined the ranks of the world's innovators with breakthroughs in some core technologies in key fields, such as manned spacecraft, Moon and Mars exploration, deep sea exploration, supercomputer, satellite navigation, quantum information, nuclear power technology, large aircraft manufacturing and biomedicine.

    "From this day forward, the central task of the CPC will be to lead the Chinese people of all ethnic groups in a concerted effort to realize the Second Centenary Goal of building China into a great modern socialist country in all respects and to advance the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation on all fronts through a Chinese path to modernization," Xi said.

    To build a modern socialist country in all respects, we must, first and foremost, pursue high-quality development, said Xi.

    In pursuing economic growth, China will continue to focus on the real economy and advance new industrialization. The country will move faster to boost its strength in manufacturing, product quality, aerospace, transportation, cyberspace and digital development.

    Education, science and technology, and human resources are the foundational and strategic pillars for building a modern socialist country in all respects, Xi said in this report, and stressed fully implementing the strategy for invigorating China through science and education, the workforce development strategy and the innovation-driven development strategy.

    "We will continue to give high priority to the development of education, build China's self-reliance and strength in science and technology, and rely on talent to pioneer and to propel development," Xi said.
