The traditional Chinese calendar divides a year into 24 solar terms, which is a product of ancient farming civilization. Xiaoman is the 8th solar term and falls on May, 21 this year. Literally, Xiaoman has two meanings. First, it reflects the abundance of rain. After Xiaoman, the rainstorms in the south of China begin to increase and precipitation is frequent. Second, it’s related to wheat. In the north of China after Xiaoman, wheat seeds and other summer crops begin to ripen.
