Bian Que was one of the most famous doctor in Chinese history. One day, he came to see Cai Huangong, king of Qi Kingdom. "You have some slight ailments between the veins of your skin," he stood before Huangong for a while, adding, "If you do not treat this ailment, I am afraid it will get worse." Cai answered, saying he was not sick. "Doctors like to show off their ability by treating people who are not sick.” Huangong said after Que had departed. About ten days later, Que once again called on Huangong, and told him, "your disease is in your muscles, and not seasonable cure will make it more serious." Huangong was unhappy and ignored the advice.
After another ten days passed, Que returned to see huangong and said, "you are sick in your stomach, not treating it will make it more serious." Huangong again ignored the advice and was unhappy.
Another ten days passed, when Que saw Huangong from a distance he turned around and ran away. Huangong felt strange and sent someone to call Bian Que. He sent back a message saying, "The ailment is between the skin texture, which could be treated by the power of hot water. When disease is in the muscles and skin, it could be cured with acupuncture. When disease is in the stomach, it could be cured with a decoction of medicinal ingredients. If disease is in the bone marrow, the physician cannot treat it. Now that it is in the bone marrow, I have to stop offering medical treatment.”
Five days later, Cai Huangong was in pain. He sent men to look for Bian Que who had already fled Qi Kingdom. Huangong fell ill and died soon after.
