An essay contest on the topic "China in My Eyes" was held in Ukraine. Excerpts of three essays, among those that won awards are presented.
Gianna: "China is my destiny and second home".
Mysterious and marvelous are the first words that come to her mind when Kulikova Gianna thinks of China.
Gianna, a Chinese language teacher at Language Park school in Ukraine, said that although China is physically far, mentally it's close to her. "China, Chinese and literature have become an integral part of my life, since I majored in Chinese at college," Gianna said.
Reminiscing about her time at Nankai University, she said, "It was some of the best days of my life. I met a lot of friends and enjoyed a wonderful campus life. Living in China was an eye-opener for me. It brought me long-hoped-for freedom and happiness."
Gianna said when she studied and traveled in Chongqing, she fell in love with the city at first sight. Delicious hot pot and spicy noodles, night views of the mountain, the sleeve dance and local folk songs are some of her cherished memories.
She believes that China is her destiny and second home and has a special place in her heart.
Kostenkin: "When I was a child, I remember that ‘MADE IN CHINA' appeared on every toy car."
Chernivsky Kostenkin, a Chinese language teacher at the Confucius Institute of South Ukrainian National Pedagogical University, said that he had known about China because, "When I was still a child I remember that 'MADE IN CHINA' appeared on every toy car." His parents told him, "China is a magical country where people's precious properties are protected by dragons and people use pictographic characters rather than letters and there was an Emperor Qin and the Great Wall." He learned Chinese martial arts, experienced the magic of acupuncture, studied Chinese and became a Chinese language teacher.
After the COVID-19 outbreak, he and his colleagues took positive actions. "We raised money to purchase masks and other personal protective equipments and sent them to Harbin Engineering University. In order to shore up the confidence of Chinese teachers in fighting the virus, we also shot videos to show our support. Now, when Ukraine needs China's help, Chinese friends also offer help in various ways and exchange their experience in fighting the pandemic, which is very important in our fight against COVID-19," he said. "I believe in deeper and further cooperation between our two countries. Our individual efforts will pave the way for the future cooperation between China and Ukraine."
Yomaji Yuri: "Although Ukraine and China are thousands of miles apart, they are like friendly neighbors who help each other"
Somaji Yuri, a graduate student majoring in Chinese at the National University of Lviv in Ukraine, became connected with China from September 2018 when he received a Chinese Government Scholarship to study Chinese at Shandong Normal University for two years.
China reminds him of "The square and upright Chinese characters, with a story behind each stroke," and "5,000 years of lasting history and splendid culture." He said he loves the profound truth implied in the simple words of The Analects, the incisiveness of the Tao Te Ching, Li Bai's romance and unconstrained imagination, and also the story of the 108 heroes gathering together at Liangshan marsh in Shandong.
"While learning about and knowing China from books, I get to make Chinese friends. They are an important window for me to understand China," he said.
After chatting with Chinese grannies, he learned how the Communist Party of China had played a pioneering role in leading the country and the people to continuously explore, forge ahead, and create new milestones. "Although Ukraine and China are thousands of miles apart, they are like friendly neighbors who help each other and overcome difficulties together."
"China has a long history and splendid civilization. In its vast territory, it is home to abundant resources with which the country flourishes and people live in peace. It is unremittingly pursuing self-improvement and advancing with the times," Yuri said, "This is China in my eyes."
