Shenzhou-12 crew members Liu Boming and Tang Hongbo carried out the first spacewalk outside China's own space station on July 4.

    This is the second extravehicular activity by Chinese astronauts since the manned mission of Shenzhou-7 in 2008.

    After about 7 hours of activities, the Shenzhou-12 crew worked closely and  completed all the scheduled tasks according to the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA). The safe return of Liu and Tang to the Tianhe core module marked the complete success of the first extravehicular activity during the space station stage.

    The scheduled tasks included the assembly of equipment for extravehicular activities, panoramic camera lifting, etc. For the first time, the astronauts tested the functional performance of China's new-generation extravehicular suits and the reliability and safety of the supporting equipment for extravehicular activities. The astronauts' ability to coordinately work with robotic arms was also examined.

    The engineers have made important improvements for the extravehicular suit based on the suits worn by Shenzhou-7 crew members. Compared with the first generation, the new suit can be used for a longer time and more flexibly with higher safety and reliability.

    There will be another spacewalk during the three-month mission.
