Claiming to continue to boost the industrialization of Intelligent Connected Vehicles (ICVs) nationwide, officials from several Chinese ministries expressed their concerns on the ICVs' development at the 2022 World Intelligent Connected Vehicles Conference, which ended on September 19.

    Currently, China has over 7,000 kilometers dedicated for the testing of different types of ICVs, such as self-driving taxis and unmanned buses. The total testing distance across the country has reached 15 million kilometers.

    Over 1,000 experimental number plates have been distributed for ICV testing in more than 80 companies in about 30 cities.

    "The commercialization of self-driving technologies will be accelerated," said an official from the Ministry of Transport (MOT) on September 19, adding that some key technological areas will be prioritized for research such as self-driving, vehicle infrastructure cooperation, and intelligent roads.

    Breakthroughs have now been made in technologies like the electrical/electronic architecture, vehicle control and operating systems, and automotive-grade LIDAR.

    Regulations on the ICVs' manufacturing enterprises and their products are also being strengthened. On March 1, the Taxonomy of Driving Automation for Vehicles was put into effect, stipulating five levels of driving automation, which ranged from emergency assistance, partial drive assistance, combined driver assistance, and conditionally automated to highly automated driving.

    "We encourage certain local governments to launch trials for automatic driving, and build up policies so as to lay practical foundations for the overall legal and regulatory development in the field," said Li Guoping, chief director of safety at MOT.

    The next stage of work, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, is to provide a new version of the guide for construction of standard systems for ICVs, the draft document of which has been made public in the ministry's official website to canvass opinions.
